Quarter / Semester Some institutions in the USA operate on a semester basis (2 semesters in a year, usually 4-5 months per semester) or a quarter basis. Many institutions on the West Coast of the USA are on a quarter system, which is typically 11-12 weeks. For institutions on the quarter system, there are 3 quarters in the normal year (Fall, Winter, Spring) and students may choose to also attend Summer quarter. Seattle Community Colleges use the quarter system.
